When Chicago Blew Up

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

So last night the Blackhawks won the cup.
And then Chicago just lost its mind.
I was told the city would go nuts, I was told it would be absolutely crazy, and I thought I was ready.
But I wasn't.

It didn't help we were right in the heat of the action in Wrigleyville where the streets were flooded.
Let me just say this, if Chicago ever riots for a bad reason, I am screwed. The city is screwed.
Because while it was exciting to be a part of something like this, I was also a little intimidated by it.
People in large groups are scary. And also bat shit crazy.
At one point I witnessed a Jeep drive through the crowd and watched two guys tear the bumper off of it in the process.
People were screaming, spraying champagne, taking their clothes off, climbing street signs,
the madness was just ridiculous.

It was all fun and games until the riot police showed up,
because when people started throwing beer bottles and firecrackers at the horses, I lost my shit.
I don't tolerate throwing stuff at animals.
The police men were able to duck and block themselves from crap being thrown their way,
but the horses had no choice but to take it and that's when I said I'd had enough and was ready to go.
What kind of ass thinks it's cute to toss a firecracker onto a helpless animal?
It may just be the nature of the beast being in a riot scene like last night, but never the less I was still pretty pissed about it.

I don't want to end on a bad note, because beside the whole police thing,
it was a pretty incredible night.
If you ever get the chance to be a part of something like this, I highly recommend you do so.

And now I'm just going to do a full 180 and leave you with a few photos from this past weekend when Chris and I ventured off to see Garden of the Gods before flying back to Chicago on Sunday.

If we ever get over Chicago, I'm thinking Colorado might be our next stop...
In the meantime,
Knox and my mom are in town for my graduation show this evening at The Second City.
It's about to get real weird tonight, full recap to come tomorrow.

  6. I would have lost it if I saw people start throwing fire crackers at horses, seriously would have had to hold me back. That PISSES me off to no end.
And coming from a Colorado-native, it's a pretty incredibly state. Especially Garden of the Gods. You took beautiful pics!

  7. not that i didn't want the B's to win it, but better you than me, girl...we slept through the night here in boston! ;)

  8. I would have started throwing firecrackers at the people. I've grown up around horses and have had one most of my life and shit like that just irritates the hell out of me. People are so inconsiderate and stupid.
Gorgeous pictures of the Garden of the Gods though!

  9. Right there with you on the animal thing. "Let's celebrate by hurting animals and being destructive".. I just don't get it. But I have witnessed New Orleans win the Super Bowl and it was truly an experience!

  10. I'm just really glad you didn't die. That looks real freaking terrifying.

  11. Haha OMG! I can't believe that. I would have been pretty mad at the whole throwing things at animals too. No. And Colorado is pretty awesome. I think I could live there. But I know Dallas needs me.

  12. I would be scared to death and also could not tolerate people throwing things at the horses! In other news the Garden of the Gods looks gorgeous!

  13. You are so brave for going outside after the Blackhawks won. I probably would have stayed inside. Crowds can be scary regardless of whether they are happy or angry. What kind of person thinks it is a good idea to throw ANYTHING at an animal, especially horses, they are so easily spooked!

  14. That crowd seemed like Lollapalooza but even more chaotic! The exact same thing happened when we won the cup in 2010, so I was debating heading north to join in the chaos, but in the end we decided to watch the game and aftermath at a local bar and watch the action unfold from a distance. I'm glad you had fun!

  16. I live on Clark and was right in middle of all the action. I have never experienced anything like it in my life! Pandemonium!! I just wish drunk people would use some common sense and not be cruel to the horses.

  17. I thought about you when Chicago won lol I was rooting for them since Pittsburgh was knocked out by Boston. Glad everything was exciting but I agree that I would have lost my shit if I saw people throwing things at the poor horses. Not cool. And Colorado looks LEGIT. I need to add it to my places to visit.

  18. I tried so hard to get my husband to go to Lakeview to watch the game just in case and he was like heck no!! We probably wouldn't have been able to get home. Good luck at graduation tonight!

  19. That's pretty messed up about the horses, because other than that it seems like a really neat time!

  20. I like in Lakeview also and was in the middle of all the chaos last night (and wrote about it on my blog- http://whoamanaroundtown.blogspot.com/2013/06/thank-you-lord-stanley.html).

Our group decided to leave the scene after the crowd started trying to tip a CTA bus over. I didn't see anyone throw firecrackers at the horses, though, that makes me so mad! Sometimes people can be such idiots.

  21. First, CONGRATULATIONS on graduating! That's so friggin cool that you are part of The Second City. High five my dear. Then, thanks for sharing those pics from last night, so cool to see the reaction in the streets afterwards (save of course for the bit about the horses. *sad face*). And finally, it is now your fault that I really want to see Colorado now. Wow gorgeousness!

  23. Whoa. I am totally with you on the throwing-shit-at-horses thing. Storytime: 7th grade we watched The Patriot in social studies. We even had to have papers signed by our parents because it was rated R. I was fine with all of the gory crap but there is one scene with a flag pole...and a horse...I literally ran from the room crying. So yeah. Anyway, it's cool that you got to be a part of the celebration, even if it did get a little crazy!

  24. Idon't get why people go crazy over sport........but I am not a sport person......lol That last picture just bloody beautiful...........

  25. That is crazy!! Great pics you got of the madness, I would be scared to even have my camera out. I hope you stuck up for those poor horses, that would have pissed me off too. Have fun with your mom and knox in town!

  27. Oh my city... gotta love it! lol. Except for the violence to animals. Just stop! My best friend back up there is grabbing a shirt for me, but she said the line was LITERALLY a mile long! So she's going to try again today (if they aren't sold out.) Crazy!
