Inside A Blogger's Fashion Shoot

Thursday, August 21, 2014

I've realized by now that so many of you (bloggers and non-bloggers alike) are probably just dying to know what it's like inside a blogger's fashion shoot.  I know I used to be curious...  Now I can't speak for everyone, but I can tell you what mine are like. I'll probably regret sharing my secrets to capturing these mind blowing shots, but I'm going to do it anyway.

"So after a boutique sends you clothing to photograph , what do you do next?" asks nobody.

Well thanks for asking. My process is very professional and very time consuming.

After I get a package in the mail I usually squeal with delight. I'm currently in the stage of paying for more writing classes/clown school so I honestly haven't been able to afford the luxury of new clothes in a quite a while. So when I get something new, I am very excited.

I immediately try it on to make sure it fits. And if it doesn't fit, I make it fit. Luckily this gorgeous Georgia dress you see from Sugar Love Boutique fits like a gem.

After I make sure the clothing fits, then I typically have to decide which hairstyle will go best with the outfit, my choices are down and wavy, or down and a little less wavy. I think it's pretty obvious which style I went with!

Then I decide which makeup will be best for the shoot. Since I've worn the same makeup since high school and don't actually know how to change up my makeup routine, it's usually a pretty easy choice.

So I went with *shimmery brown eye shadow, black eyeliner, black mascara, and a shit ton of bronzer. Done and done. Oh and did you notice I've started wearing a little bit of lipstick? I have. It goes with my bangs I think. Gives me a bit of an edge. No biggy.

And then I wait for my photographer to be ready. Depending on whether the shoots are taking place before or after Chris goes to work, we typically have around 3-5 minutes to get them done.

"Hey, will you take a quick photo for me? Real fast. Fast. Thanks." I ask Chris as he's usually just walking in, or just walking out. He's a sport and almost always says yes.

We then walk outside and I try to look for the part of our street that is least ugly with the least amount of people walking by that I think will judge me. When I've found it, I shove the camera into his chest and say, okay go. And then I hold onto my purse and tuck one leg behind the other and shout things like "does my hair make me look like a Cocker Spaniel?" and "do I have fat arm in any of the pics?" and also "do I look gross with this smile?" as he starts snapping photos.

Sometimes I try to get fancy and I'll show Chris photos of fashion bloggers I admire right before we shoot in an attempt to get their same shots. "How do I do that thing where I act like I'm not looking at the camera?" I ask.

"You don't look at the camera," he replies in a dead pan tone. He's such a sweetheart.

And then we usually finish with an extra special finale shot. It's me walking. The other day I said, "Chris, let's take a walking shot now." And then I started walking in slow motion as if I've never walked before. Until he got annoyed and said, "Tay, just WALK. Like a human." He's so smart sometimes.

Here I am. Just walking. Like a human. NAILED IT.

Dress can be found here.  Shoes can be found lying next to my bed. And I'm not sure where that purse is at the moment.

It's not easy taking blogger fashion shoots, but someone's gotta do it. Feel free to share these tips or even use them for inspiration!

Have a great day blogworld! God love ya, you keep me young!

  1. My little China doll, you have perfected that walk with ease and grace. Unlike the last time I tried the walk and tripped over a crack in the sidewalk. Luckily no one was harmed in the walk but it was a close call.

  3. YOu have no idea how much i loved this post. This is exactly how i feel haha. My poor boyfriend. Hes always like uhhh sure ill take a photo. then just stands there and i realize i need to direct him in what to do lol! i also try to scurry out and do it on the sidewalk before any judging cars go by ROFL!!!!

When i'm no where near other human beings (like in my backyard) i put my camera on a tripod and i use a wireless remote. I still dont have the balls to do that in public yet tho bc im still getting over my fear of being judged hahaha

  4. FACE IT: you look great in that dress. I actually feel awkward in my own backyard- with a fence- about michael taking pictures of me. ugh i hate it so much. Especially when I ask "does my face look fat" and he says here you look. great.
also i can definitely tell which hairstyle you went with #nailedit

  5. Until he got annoyed and said, "Tay, just WALK. Like a human." That made me choke on an olive and laugh aloud WAY too hard in the office. I think I just outed myself that I do like, 25% work and 75% reading/words with friends/IMing my work friends.

On a related note - about how boyfriends are clueless about picture taking - the closest I ever got is my boyfriend taking a video of me doing the Ice Bucket Challenge. It went great until I watched the video and realized my form-fitting shirt had me looking "cold" before i even dumped the water on myself. And he DIDNT EVEN SAY ANYTHING. so I couldn't even upload the video to FB for fear of my pride. And girls.

    Why are boys so stupid.

    You look pretty.

  6. HAHA this is hilarious- I have my first dress shoot coming up tomorrow, and my bf could not be more excited!!!! {dripping in sarcasm here}. I imagine my "shoot" (if you can call it that) will go pretty much exactly like what you describe here!

  7. pretty much nailed it. other than "amanda stop talking. your mouth looks weird in all of these." or "omg there's a car coming" and we're in the middle of the road.

  10. I could never be a fashion blogger but girl you're nailing it! And those bangs?! Yes!! Makes me miss mine. Also, I need that dress in my life!

  11. Haha my mom takes all my pictures and it usually goes something like "Here, look at them, I know you won't like them" "Yeah let's take those again" "I told you so"

  12. Hahaha I love it. I feel so awkward posing for photos in front of other people being all, what the heck is thei weirdo doin. At least you make it look good...also good work on the normal walking. Despite Tara Banks sage wisdom on ANTM all these years I can't get the face with the body movement down yet lol

  13. I'm laughing because this is hilarious, but I'm also kind of sad because I'm writing a mock fashion post for next week and it won't be nearly this funny. At least I have the broken ankle to differentiate mine. :P

Oh! On a similar note to forgetting how to walk. There's a card game that involves secret signals to your partner so they can call it when your cards match, but the other players win if they call it before your team mate. Playing this game I forget how to be normal, and my "secret signals" are always the most obvious, ridiculous imitations of natural body movements. "Huh, how do I normally scratch my nose?" or "I always nearly sprain my neck to flip my hair! Nothing to see here, guys."

  14. you are insanely hilarious! I love your writing style! I always joke with my husband that I don't want anyone to see me taking pics because "who am I?" (aka not a model). you make it look easy!

  15. Can you give me tips on the walking ones? I tried it recently in the backyard and it was one big fail. That and a basset hound was racing at me....

  16. haha I love this! I have this dream where one day I'll post a tell-all outfit post where I fearlessly blog all of the awkward pose / fat arm / mid-sneeze photos that took place during the shoot. Think of how relatable I'll be!

  17. Seriously whenever I try to do a perfect "walking" photo I am blown away by the awkwardness of my walking captured on film. Who knew I could be such an awkward walker?!

  18. This is great! I hate having my photo taken so I would make a terrible fashion blogger. You look great,!

  19. Oh man you're hilarious! That dress is great.

  20. So funny. And so true. I mean really, isn't this truly what are significant others for?!

  21. This made me laugh! I'm so glad that your photo shoot process is similar to mine - I thought I was weird and doing something wrong.

  22. Love this! My husband doesn't take a lot of mine (I use a tripod and a timer!), but the dialogue sounds the same. Except now he's getting ballsy and has all these "directions" on how I should pose and look. This poor man, I have just un-manned him over the years;)

  23. This made me laugh. So cute! I'm always curious how other bloggers are doing their magic.

  24. You are like a supermodel so OF COURSE I'VE BEEN WONDERING WHAT IT'S LIKE.

"We then walk outside and I try to look for the part of our street that is least ugly with the least amount of people walking by that I think will judge me." That is the hardest part. How in the world does all this take only five to ten minutes? And how can I get my husband to join in?

  25. I always feel like a big weirdo when I'm taking photos for my blog, whether my husband is taking them (and getting more and more annoyed with every shot) or I'm using a tripod, although I feel MUCH weirder when using a tripod -- I can't figure out how to use the remote without the remote being in the photo, so I have to run back and forth to push the camera button every 10 seconds. The worst was when I was using the tripod on a basically empty sidewalk and this woman was running by and offered to take the photos for me! I think she thought I was a tourist, but I wasn't about to make this poor woman stop her jog just so I could get a picture of my work outfit. Ugh. And I look ridiculous when I don't look at the camera or don't smile.
But, of course, even with the drama behind the scenes, these photos of you are fantastic! I really love the walking one.

  26. Love it! I always wanted to know how you got your fab photos! You make it look easy!

  27. LOL! Loved this! Sounds like how it would go at my house if I asked my husband to help. My teenage daughter does a much better job...that is, when she isn't rolling her eyes. Makes my pics cockeyed. :)

  28. I literally LOL when I read your blog. Always. And I love how you make sponsored post enjoyable to read!

  29. Oh how I would love to have great legs, but mine are short and fat and you know even when I was at my thinnest I still had fat legs

  30. This is so great. I haven't yet ventured into asking my fiance to help take photos because I'm sure his commentary would be interesting haha!

  32. marinir seo new to blogging I would say because my personal blog is just about a year old. But I have been a freelance writer for three years before I started my own blog and still a freelancer to this day so that makes it four years for me as a freelance writer. I know the many tricks about commenting in blogs and I get paid to crate accounts to make comments on blog sites of clients some of them are pretty up there in Google Pagerank.
