What's The Deal With Miley Cyrus

Wednesday, October 7, 2015

I feel like a grandma saying this, but I don't get Miley Cyrus. She makes me want to take a nap.

Have you ever looked at her Instagram before?

Like what's happening there? Is this what the kids are into? Are they all eating glitter and stuff now? If so, that's fine. I just want someone to explain it to me. I used to eat glitter Play Doh, so I guess I kind of get it.

And what's going on with her latest album release? I don't like to knock artists but... I don't like it. So maybe that means it's good? I'm one of those lambs who has to hear a song like 100 times (unless it's folk, I LOVE all folk) before I think it's good.

You wanna talk about good music? Now her Breakout CD was great. I've bought probably eight CDs in my life and that was one of them. I cruised around so hard in college singing,

"I can almost see it.
That dream I'm dreaming, but
There's a voice inside my head saying
You'll never reach it."

Well, Miley reached it.

Here's the thing, her weird outfits don't bother me. I went through a weird outfit phase too. I once had a belt adorned with bottle caps that buckled like a seat belt! I wore leopard capri pants on the first day of 8th grade WITH crimped hair. And I used to wear blue penguin pajama pants to school. So Miley, I get it. And if she makes just one outsider feel okay about not being like the rest of the them, well then that's great.

And as for the fact she likes to be naked all of the time? Good for her. Whether she's doing it all for show or not, let's embrace it. Women have been forced to be covered up for centuries, so what if we've got a wild child on our hands who wants to "free the nipple" and empower the women movement. It's just a nipple, we've all got them.

Now does freeing the nipple empower me? Absolutely not. It gives me anxiety and nightmares. But we're all different.

But here's the kicker. Here's the one thing I really don't understand about Miley and wish someone could explain to me, why is she always talking about smoking pot? Why why why.

You smoke, Miley. We get it. No one cares. Anyone else feel like she's a little late to this party but doesn't realize it? Ya Miley, I remember my first beer too...

I mean it's basically legal everywhere now. I've seen Chicago police walk by people smoking joints on the street and not do a thing. Because it's pot. Your grandparents probably still smoke it on occasion. Move along.

But then I have to remember she's what like 19? Or 25? I have no idea. I just know that she grew up in a Disney world so she probably missed out on the whole high school/ college thing when everyone thought they were the first to discover pot and it was so cool and wanted to shout to the world about it while wearing their Bob Marley shirts and hemp necklaces.

I have no way to end this. I just watched her host SNL this past weekend and I really hoped it wasn't someone on their writing team who wrote the "joke" in her opening monologue about "someone who smokes as much as me is always on a seven second delay..." I literally groaned out loud.

Just live your truth, girl.

What do you think, blog world? Am I just too old for Miley these days? Or is it all just a very calculated show and underneath all of the costume and glitter she's really just Demi Lovato?

  1. I'm with you...I just don't get her. It comes off as trying TOO hard to be "edgy" and "weird"...she's definitely over the top, but in a very forced way I think. I don't get her and I hope I never do lol

  2. I don't understand Miley either...what I do understand is her album Breakout--that really spoke to my soul. Just listened to "Bottom of the Ocean" the other day and it is SO poetic. I mean, the part where she slows it down and whispers, "just breathe," gets me every time.

  3. Yeah I don't get Miley at all. My brain hurts when I try to understand her life.

  4. I used to like her. Shortly after Hannah Montana ended, and she started to get into fashion, I thought, this is going to be one classy lady, and then it's like she had a stroke or something. How else can you explain her tongue constantly hanging out? It's like she's trying so hard to show she's not repressed. I'm kind of just waiting for the train wreck to be cleaned up, so we can move past the tracks.

  5. I don't get her AT ALL. to me she looks absolutely crazed. i get it, you want to be different but that doesn't mean you have to try to be a blubbering idiot spewing glitter and mary jane.

  6. I don't get it either. I loved her last album. It's just too much now. Maybe we're all old and cranky?

  7. I just find her annoying... like a more annoying version of Ke$ha.

  8. So this is weird, but we actually discussed her in our marriage counseling session last night haha! I literally can't with her. Think about this though...almost all Disney child stars act out or go through this weird sexual phase once they hit 17 or so and are out of Disney's clutches. So WHAT exactly happened to Miley during her Disney days to make her a total freak??? Liam Helmsworth is one hell of a man to have put up with her thats for sure!

  9. Nah, you're not alone. I watched her on Jimmy Fallon last week, watched her host SNL...don't get why she brings up the pot allllll the time... but yeah, you're right, maybe growing up a Disney kid did this to her. I don't know. But she definitely makes me feel really old.

  11. I have respect for the girl for putting her naked self out there but I'm so with you on the pot thing. I groan out loud anytime she talks about weed, too! It's so annoying .

  12. Hahah yes the weed talk annoys me to no end! It's totally because she missed out on it unlike the rest of us who went through that phase earlier...I mean I was over it by like 17 lol. Not that cool, I can think weird shit and eat snacks all day long sober. Or sometimes I think she's trying to be like snoop dog or something...for some reason. But he's one of a kind sorry Miley. Just be Miley. Didn't she have a song with those exact lyrics lol???

  14. Hasn't she hosted a couple times now? I don't understand why they keep putting her on things... Maybe they are trying to reach a younger demographic and it's time for me to understand that I'm just not in that group anymore. Which is utterly depressing. Miley is cool, and I'm old? That's a great way to start my day.

  15. I get that she wanted to rebrand herself and stop being a "Disney girl" but she has become ridiculous. She's seriously a punch line. And it's really sad.

  16. I'm 21 (woohoo) and I am 100% done with Miley. I do not understand her and I'm not even remotely interested in trying to understand her haha. She has moved beyond me...or maybe I've moved beyond her? Ha. I'm all for people living life the way they want, but being half naked and smoking pot 100% of the time can get a bit boring and repetitive instead of being "edgy".

  17. I thought when she started going a little edgy it was cool. Now it just seems over the top and fake. I also think she brings a horrible stereotype to people that smoke. The majority of people I know that smoke are hardworking professionals. She's the type of person anti-drug campaigns are made for.

  18. I appreciate what she's doing for people that dress and behave out of the box. I also really like her push for support and resources for the young LGBT community. I don't get the craziness, though... Lots of artists go through phases (Lady Gaga, Katy Perry) but Miley has been in this "phase" for a while and really wish it'd pass... Also, I still own that bottlecap belt and I am religiously waiting for the trend to come back.

  19. It's like watching Britney all over again........................ So sad.

  20. I still wear my beer bottle cap / seatbelt belt....I love it. : )

    1. Nope, Kelly. I can't help it, I love my belt. I've had it since college.

  21. I have to share this. Thank you for putting into words, what we've all been thinking. I love that she's doing her own thing and "freeing the nip," but the weed thing-actually, the whole drug thing-is just kind of weird and embarrassing.

  22. She has a great vice but what the hell she is weird just saying

  23. I used to love Miley-- even when she was being a total weirdo, because hey, who of us isn't weird, right? But now I feel like she is just constantly rebelling for no reason. And the pot thing, come on, she's played that WAY out and I'm over it for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  24. UGH I ALWAYS WANTED ONE OF THOSE BELTS! I definitely feel like Miley is just trying too hard to be "edgy" or whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I used to like that she stood for being yourself even if it means being a weirdo but now I just think she's gone sort of cray. Her weed references remind me of a few FB friends I have from high school who feel the need to repost 420 jokes five times a day. It's like WE GET IT YOU'RE HIGH. Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that all they can think about when they're high is posting photos of bongs and talking about being high? Maybe I'm just bitter because their photos of weed get more likes than my photos of macaroons. Just kidding, who could like anything more than a macaroon photo?

  26. I cringed at that part too and immediately assumed they wrote it and made her say it because even she seemed awkward and tired of saying it.
the thing about Miley, she's not hurting anyone. she's not having a meltdown "like britney" or crashing cars like Lohan. I think that when her dog Floyd died, something in her changed and now she's just living every minute of life fully, which so many of us unfortunately can't. to me it just seems like for a long time she wasn't allowed to be herself and she wasn't happy (based on recent interviews talking about the Hannah days), and I think now she's finally really happy and people see that as "omg she's crazy and weird" but really she's just chillin :)
the new album, I can't say I love it as a whole - at all, but as someone who has lost pets there just are some songs that really tug at my heart strings. like Pablow the Blowfish, it's really raw and emotional. but I could def do without her screaming "yeaaaa i smoke pot!!!" in whatever song that is.
I think I got too deep with this hahaha

  27. You aren't alone in feeling that way. I really wanted to find this gif to share with you, but I lost it. It had a clip of her video where she's eating glitter and just switched to Steve Harvey giving one of his classic "WTF" faces.

  28. I'm so glad I don't get Miley Cyrus either. She tries so hard to be *unique* that it's ridiculous.

  29. I actually watched her when she was on Jimmy Fallon & it's like she's just trying WAY too hard not to be Hannah Montana anymore. It's almost hard to watch her now. I have the SNL waiting for me to view so I hope that it's not too much cuz I may just turn 'er off. : \

  30. She has a handful of songs that I like, but other than that I don't particularly care for her. She is much too wild for me ha ha!

  31. when I first opened this post I was cautious cause I love Miley but also, I can't stand most of the criticism against her. I think a lot of it is bullshit. So bravo cause this post was good. and made me laugh. So kudos. Also, yeah, I totally think its just the fact that she missed out on that phase that you described so perfectly (needing to shout about weed from the roof tops while wearing a bob marley shirt lmao) can't really fault her for that. We've (almost) all been there.
