He Ate The Bread

I’m a ham for Valentine’s Day. It’s true. I’m not into big romantic gestures or anything dumb like that, but I like a day where I wake up feeling excited to celebrate the Valentine’s in my life. Is that silly? Probably.

We planned to have a low-key Valentines evening in on Saturday because it’s freezing here and because it takes a lot to get us out on a Saturday night. We were the epitome of lazy city-dwellers and Chris decided to get all of our groceries delivered from Whole Foods. 1. In all of our time in Chicago we’ve never had our groceries delivered. That’s a luxury I don’t even dream of. And 2. Whole Foods is too rich for my blood. Regardless, it was a special day so Chris did it.

Mr. Whole Foods delivery man also surprised me with roses. What a doll.

The menu for the evening was going to be cheese tortellini with a red lamb meat sauce and a delicious loaf of fresh bread on the side. Chris unpacked the groceries, we said good-bye to Harlow and then went to brunch.

Harlow practically pushed out us the door. “Go to brunch, you two. Have fun. You deserve it.” He said. And so we did.

Before coming home we stopped at PetCo to get Harlow a giant Heart sized bone. He deserved it we thought. Little did we know.

The first thing we saw when we walked inside was the bread wrapping all over the living room. This little devil crawled up onto a stool and then onto the table and pulled down that delicious loaf of bread. See that rug burn on his nose? You’ll learn what that’s all about in a second.

We were pissed. For some reason Chris and I were really looking forward to this damn bread. He bought fresh pesto and mozzarella to go on top and it was going to be really good. Apparently Harlow thought so too.

We were also surprised Harlow could eat an entire loaf of bread without throwing up. He’s one of those dogs who doesn’t eat a lot. His bowl will sit full of food for hours at a time.

Turns out he didn’t.

I walked into our guest room closet and buried at the very bottom in a box of old t-shirts was half of the loaf of bread. That little hoarder hid it away for a rainy day! Thus the rug burn on his nose. He was probably digging that perfect hiding spot for at least thirty minutes. I’ve seen him do it one too many times with his bones.

But wait, there’s more.

When I went into our living room and sat down on one of our arm chairs I noticed the cushion was uneven. I picked it up and what do you know? More bread. Hidden in the very corner amongst a pile of bread crumbs was a dirty little nugget of a piece. He nearly put a hole in the cushion and the back of the chair he was digging at it so hard.

By this time he was very amused. He was basically rolling on the floor in fits of laughter.

I wasn’t so amused.

In the end, we ate our delicious dinner and made our bread on de-thawed frozen hot dog buns. See, that’s why we can’t have nice things around our house. After a few glasses of wine, we got over it. But Harlow is still clearly thinking about the other spots in this house where that bread is hiding…

And that’s the story of our 8th Valentines Day together.

HAHAHA oh my gosh what a great story but I would have been pretty pissed as well, don't come between me and my bread! I'm sure Harlow was just thinking he needed to give you a good story for the blog. What a thoughtful, considerate pup. 😉

LOL! It's so hard to stay mad at your dog when it does something like this! That's just too funny.

That guilty looking photo of him is hilarious! Our 22lb mini border collie did that to us on Christmas! The little brat ate an ENTIRE loaf of french bread Christmas Eve. She didn't eat for 3 days after because she was so full/sick. However.. I think she did it to save me from eating all those carbs because I was complaining that whole week about feeling heavy and sluggish from all the holiday food..

Granted Harlow isn't mine so I can laugh, but I know just how ticked I would be if Cornflake ate a loaf of Whole Foods bread! Cornflake is our cat…guess I should be more worried about buying salmon lol.

We have learned the hard way that we are to never leave any type of food out on the counters. When there is a will there is a way. Love the fact that he tried to hide it…smart boy:-)

Oh gosh, well at least it was kind of fun trying to find where he hid the bread? Our dogs just leave a mess for us to clean up when they get into things. No fun games of hide and seek for us.

And people say animals act on instinct and can't think things through. Yeah, right!

LMAO! That is actually the funniest Valentine's Story I've read. At least he didn't get sick (because, holy cow! That was a lot of bread!).

My dog is a counter surfer as well. She's helped herself to loafs of bread (Thanksgiving) and homemade muffins, put on the counter to cool. She has good taste, I can't blame her!
