The World of Online Dating

Last night the tornados skipped Chicago (thank GOD!) the rain finally stopped, and for just a second the sun found a break in the dark sky. So I called Chris and told him we should make the most of the “nice weather” and catch a show at Up Comedy Club.

The view from the train platform as I headed toward Old Town. Like I said, the sun was trying its hardest to come out.

The show we saw was called “Date Me: an OKCupid Experiment.” They used actual dialogue, screen names, messages, ext from the dating site OkCupid to create the show. It was hilarious. And terrifying. Very very terrifying.

Since I locked down Chris while I was still in college I’ve never experienced the world of online dating. But I know a lot of people who have, and even people who’ve found their spouses online. So it obviously works- sometimes. But some of the stories played out last night/people portrayed on stage were absolutely insane. There are some major cray crays on the internet.

I just don’t think I would be cut out for online dating. I’m way too judgy and cynical when it comes to first impressions. If you’re a guy and you can’t make me laugh, or if I can tell you’re trying too hard to make me laugh, I’m swiping to the left. (Did you catch that? That was a Tinder reference, it’s what all the kids are doing these days. Or maybe it’s swiping right, I have no idea.) Luckily, Chris meets all my laughing criteria. And he’ll never leave me because…

Hehe.

Anyway, I don’t think there’s quite the stigma on online dating like there used to be and I think that’s good. Why should it be weird anymore? That’s just the way of the world now. And no, this isn’t a plug for online dating but I’m realizing it’s definitely starting to sound like that. EVERYBODY GO DATE SOMEONE FROM THE INTERNET RIGHT NOW. After seeing the show last night I’m just intrigued by it is all. And now I want to know all the crazy stories about bad online dates. So if you have one and are willing to share, do tell!

This has been a lollygag of a Friday post. My apologies. My head’s in the weekend clouds.

Have a good Friday! Go do you!

I got talked into joining Tinder a couple weeks ago… it's definitely hilarious to say the least

I met my husband online (match.com) 10 years ago. We've been married 5. Before that, yeah, met some "special" ones. They were weirder in person than online. The weirdest experience was actually eHarmony refusing to match me…apparently I had an un-datable personality or something in their opinion.

I've never attempted online dating… although I have met someone in person that I had previously interacted with online… by playing bridge!

i love the "looking into eachother eyes pic" michael is so hard to wrangle to take pics. that show sounds really awesome – what a good concept (and marketing play too). I wonder how I would be online. I smell a link up….

Oh. My. Stars. Just did the online thing and while I met a cutie there were plenty of weirdos. One told me my divorce was my fault, another professed his undying love…even after I completely ignored every message sent. It's not fun, but definitely the way to go for busy professionals (read: anti-social Netflix marathoners).

My sister met her current beau through online dating (Plenty of Fish), and he seems nice enough. I can't find guys I like online. They're all looking for a Stepford wife, and that is not my goal. They also tend to not get my sense of humor, which is off-putting. And the guys that I click yes on, don't click yes on me. I don't think I'll find the One online. Maybe an old-fashioned Meet Cute is in the cards.

After a bad breakup several years ago I was having trouble meeting guys. I was out of college by then and wasn't the go to a bar and hope for the best type of gal. So I paid $59.95 and joined E-Harmony. I spent many nights getting drunk, watching Lost and weeding out the idiots. I eventually went out with one guys for a short time, but his abundance of chick flicks and sheer hatred of camping/drinking/eating food besides chicken nuggets left me wanting a refund.

I was pissed that I got matched with a doofus to say the least and was losing hope. I got back on E-harmony and came across a guy who barely had any pictures but, looked cute in the ones he had. And he had two cats. After refusing to meet him in person for awhile, I got drunk one night and apparently agreed to go on a date that week. We just celebrated our one year wedding anniversary, and five year being together anniverary, so online dating can work. You just need some patience, a reputable site, and alcohol.

I've written a few blog posts on my crazy dates, but the worst one I had was the first online date I ever went on. He didn't look anything like his photo, brought me six random gifts that he made me open in front of him (one of which was a journal with inspirational quotes that he wrote in as well as my first, middle and last name … None of which I had given him). He answered a phone call for almost five minutes, bashed feminism (as soon as he found out I was a women and gender studies minor in college) and then I finally told him I needed to leave. He said, "okay, I have to go take my yum yums" – his nickname for his anti-depressants. As we walked out, he noticed a sign on the building that said no guns allowed and he goes, "oh man! Good thing they didn't know I was packin'" or something along those lines … So he had a gun on him the whole time. I freaked out, threw the bag of gifts in my car and left. It was so crazy!

I don't like online dating because you don't see the partner, don't hear. I prefer the real dating. After I write my essay, I'll go on my real date.
