One day it was summer in Chicago and the next day it was fall. We received zero transition time this year. The mornings went from 80 to 50 in a matter of 24 hours, I’m not kidding, guys. This happened.
I get it, people like fall. I do too, and I’d probably like it a lot more if we had the luxury of a backyard. Something about having to put pants and a jacket on the moment I get up to take Har outside, just grinds on me. You’d think I’d be used to it by now, but I’m not. Shorts and flip-flops are just so much easier.
Anyway, because I’m feeling lazy, and because it’s extra cold today, I’m going to write a post called, Ten Things I Do At The Start Of Every Fall. #mustread
1. I gripe about fall, while also being secretly excited about it.
(I do this because I feel like I’m cheating on my main squeeze, summer. And I never really want to let summer go.) I saw our neighborhood pools were finally drained and I actually had to fight back tears.
Change is good, Tay. It’s okay.
2. I ceremonially buy my first fall scented candle and make a very big deal about it.
It takes me an hour to choose which one, but once I know, I know. And then I take it home with me like it’s a new baby from the hospital.
When it’s dusk, I’ll light it and soak up every second of the moment. And after that first candle, it’s all downhill.
3. First the candle, then the pot of chili.
The first pot of chili for the season is always a big moment in our house. Harlow gets excited. Chris gets excited. We ALL get excited.
“I’m making chili,” I’ll text Chris.
“Oh boy. Is it already that time?” He’ll respond.
“It is.“
And then he usually comes home from work about 20 minutes early to eat said chili. (With a cinnamon roll on the side because that’s what we were raised to do in Nebraska.)
4. And then there’s the fall TV.
I’m at the point where I typically only watch Netflix and Amazon shows, but there’s something about the idea of new fall TV shows that always gets me excited- even though I rarely watch them.
I found myself googling when is “This Is Us” coming back on and I had to step back and ask, WHO ARE YOU? That is the one mainstream show I watch and I hate how much I like it. I scoffed at it the first time I watched it, rolled my eyes hard at how cliche it was, and then one moment later I was sobbing with Randall and now I’m anxiously waiting for it to return.
5. Buy a new blanket from Target.
Blankets, candles, coffee mugs, yup that’s me, I can’t get enough of the basic shit. Target has me eating out of the palm of their hand this time of year and I can’t help it.
A fresh clean throw on the couch this time of year makes me stupidly happy.
6. The pumpkin beer…
I’ve drank one Pumpkin Spiced Latte in my life and found it to be quite gross. Pumpkin beer on the other hand, I’m all about.
You’ll know when I have my first one for the season because I make sure to gram that shit.
7. I take pics of pumpkins.
Lots and lots of pics.
Because pumpkins are very gram worthy and my life as a blogger is weird.
8. And leaves.
“Look at my feet surrounded by leaves,” will become my mantra for pics for the next eight weeks.
9. I break out the fall movies.
I’ve already watched my first, The Skeleton Twins. It’s a dark comedy and a personal favorite of mine. I need to add more to my list, do you have any favorites? (Other than Hocus Pocus or the Olsen Twins movie.)
10. I begin to hibernate.
Plans past dusk? No, thank you. My hours for leaving the house slim to only the time frame of 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Anything before or after can wait.
Winter is coming.
I just hope we have a nice, long Fall season! I dread the cold weather. However, if I didn't have to get out in it (to go to work) everyday, I'd love to sit inside and just look at it!! I love watching it snow, but, again, only from inside my house!!

We do the cinnamon roll on the side with chili here in Missouri too! I think we picked it up from the school menus – chili con carne with tots and cinnamon roll. You knew it was going to be a good day when you walked into the school and were greeted with the smell of fresh baked cinnamon rolls. Yum!
The cinnamon roll with the chili is a new one for me. We do cornbread here in VA. Ya know, southern and all that. I could go for some blankets and candles right now.
I have a love hate relationship with fall. I love all things pumpkin and all the scents but I'd really love it if I could have all things fall with summer weather. I like to watch the Adams Family movies and a A Nightmare Before Christmas this time of year.
I'm on the Iowa/Nebraska border, and pretty much all of August was fall weather. Not sure where summer went. July was hot for about two weeks, and that's about it. I prefer fall, but this year I just want to hibernate.

I live in Alabama and live for the fall!!! Our summers are just too dang miserable to enjoy so I always dread leaving the house anytime from May-September. I can't wait to be able to open the windows and get some fresh air in the house, sit on the patio watching my daughter play in the yard without getting bit by mosquitos and melting away, and yes to the pumpkin beer and fall scented candles! What's your favorite scent? Oh and cinnamon rolls with chili?! Never heard of that. We usually do Mexican corn bread, but I can definitely jump on the cinnamon roll train!

I like the fall due to "Hope Falls Eternal" with college football and college volleyball. (Pro football? I couldn't care less.)

I have to say, I've heard of the chili and cinnamon roll combo before, but I didn't believe it really was an actual THING! It sounds so gross, but as I tell my kids, don't knock it till you've tried it … I may have to try it. 🙂
